Dental crowns and bridges are basically a covering placed on a tooth. Crowns are made of ceramic (porcelain), silver, gold or a combination of different metals. It is designed to fit over a tooth comfortably and the main idea of installing dental crowns and bridges is to protect sensitive teeth and to strengthen the weaker ones; for example, Teeth that have had a root canal treatment are usually very sensitive after the surgical procedure, and teeth that have been extensively repaired or filled, are generally weak – dental crowns and bridges act as support to both these kind of teeth.
The procedure of getting a dental crown generally requires two sittings at the dentist’s clinic and the first one can take up to ninety minutes wherein the crown is prepared and the second would be around a half hour sitting wherein the crown will be fitted.
Bridges are like dental crowns except for the fact that a dental crown is fitted as a protection for a single tooth whereas a bridge is used to replace multiple missing teeth. Bridges are mainly fitted with the intent to prevent the teeth around the missing tooth/teeth from moving and thereby changing the structure of the mouth. Like a dental crown, even a bridge may me made of gold or porcelain or a combination of both. And the procedure of fitting a dental bridge takes almost as long as a dental crown.
Dental crowns and bridges must be treated by a qualified dental surgeon. This procedure requires piece of skills, so it is better to discuss it with your dentist and then opt for dental crowns and bridges. If treated properly, it can last for a long period of time without giving you much trouble.
